Jake Okechukwu Effoduh is an Assistant Professor at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law of Toronto Metropolitan University. His research is at the intersections of law, human rights, and artificial intelligence, and he has contributed to developing AI policies and legal frameworks in several countries, including Canada, the United States, Brazil, Kenya, China and Nigeria. Jake obtained law degrees from Osgoode Hall Law School of York University, the University of Oxford, and the University of Abuja. He has held fellowships at Harvard Law School, Harvard Kennedy School, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Ottawa, and the University of Cape Town. Before his academic appointment, he was a Partner at Praxis & Gnosis Law. Jake is currently executing a SSHRC-Explore Grant titled “Codes for Algorithmic Justice”, where he is evaluating regulatory solutions for algorithmic bias against equity-deserving populations in Canada. He is also a 2025/26 Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst Fellow and a UNESCO Expert on AI and the Rule of Law, providing training to judges, law teachers and legal officers on the use of AI in legal and judicial contexts. Some of his works have been published by the Harvard Human Rights Journal, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Journal of Robotics, AI and Law, Journal of Scholarly Publishing, Journal of Sustainable Development Law, Centre for International Governance Innovation, African Journal of Legal Studies, and the TWAIL Review. In August 2025, he was recognized and awarded by the City of Brampton for his excellence in AI and Law for sustainable development in Canada.
